Depending on the type of upgrade, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level and boost additional stats.

Upgrades to equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests Each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next one by a certain amount.

Item Level

When an item is upgraded, its stats are increased in value. This is the sum of all the leveled up benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades can be expensive depending on who you hire and what you decide to do. This is because of how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.

It can also be used to enforce gating requirements when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It can also be used as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and raids and scenarios, and to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is restricted to an lower level). The average level of the item is listed on the character sheet.

Utilizing the level of an item can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a sign of the item's condition and its quality. The item level can also be used to compare items when examining the inventory of a seller.

On PC, you are able to see the level of the item by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the full item description, including its ilvl. It can also be located by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.

There are several theories on how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the item level is a number that comes from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that different perks have different worth and gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This process can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl, which is usually close to Blizzard's actual item level.

However, this isn't the only factor that determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the region the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, for example by adding an amount to its haste or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level situations will have higher ilvl.

Item Stats

Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and to prevent one weapon from being ”the most effective.” The stat mods on weapons boost base stats. These stat mods are then enhanced by a player's skill.

Upgrades to an item can increase its stats. The costs for upgrades are determined by the rarity of the item upgrader mod. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded multiple times with higher costs.

Another way to change the stats of an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player and they come in all shapes and sizes. The affixes could be used to give the item additional damage, add a special ability to the item (such as reviving dead or decreasing the duration of cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving an additional name to the item.

All affixes can be currently re-rolled by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade items gauges as with other rerolling methods.

In addition to the possibility of rerolling affixes, players may select which stats to be kept on an item after it is upgraded. The possible stat ranges of an item are based on the level of the item, but all items are guaranteed to have at least 1 stat within that range, unless it is an exclusive item or a God roll from a raid boss.

Another thing that could change is the option to upgrade equipment without having to reroll affixes, or choose which stats to increase. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-item level, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player can increase the chance of finding items as well as the properties spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives the player the chance to upgrade item their gear earlier in the game. This is especially advantageous in the early game, since players tend to prioritize weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chances of upgrading that increase with each level of the item. They can also be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields, and weapons have the default Luck value of 40. These items can be augmented with golden ingots, or spined leather (depending on the type of material) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.

Furthermore some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow, can be equipped to boost the damage of any damage-dealing skill by five percent. These items are available in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade or to prevent players from losing their item if it fails.

The rate of success of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage is the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limitations to the extent to which the success rates can be improved and the probability of an upgrade failing cannot exceed 100%.

The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Every item has a success rate of 25 percent and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

The upgrade overlays of the item are displayed above items in the inventory. This could cause obscurity to enchantment effects or other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
