First, make sure that the battery is brand new. Remove the battery from the ignition, then press the lock button fast three times.

Battery

The easiest way to fix the battery of your key fob is to replace it. The fob has a tiny coin-shaped 3V battery (CR2032 or CR2025) that is usually easy to find in general stores and home improvement stores, as well as some auto parts stores. Make sure you get a brand new battery – old batteries are often no longer good for anything and could cause damage to the circuit board.

Begin by opening the fob. It might be tight, but with the help of a flat screwdriver you will be able to break the two halves. Attach the screwdriver to the seams on both sides of the fob and lift the clips which hold it in place. They are easy to break therefore, work slowly and carefully.

Reassemble the fob after replacing the battery, and examine it to determine if the device does what it is supposed to. If it does not work after pressing the button a few times, ensure that the contacts are clean. You can also test the issue with a spare fob to see if the problem is confined to your key. If it isn't then there could be a different reason for why your key fob isn't working. For instance it could be because the button is worn out. This will only make the button function occasionally and not all the time.

Interference

The key for mini cooper fob is powered by a small transmitter that transmits signals of a short range to a receiver inside your car. Its goal is to enable your car to recognize the fob, and open its doors when you are near it and to start when you press the ignition button inside.

Interference may sometimes hinder communication. If you charge your second-generation Apple Pencil while holding the fob (via iGeneration) it may prevent you from unlocking the vehicle.

Other electronic devices that operate on the same frequency as the fob may interfere with its signal. This includes garage door openers and tire pressure monitoring systems. Even a transmitter at your home could be causing interference however it is not easy for an expert to test.

The key fob might require reprogramming. The transmitter on the fob you have purchased must be recognized by Mini's receiver. A unique code is then generated for each pairing. Fobs are typically programmed after being removed or replaced, if you purchase a replacement or, in rare cases when the battery is changed. Follow the directions in your owner’s manual to change the programming of a key fob. You can also consult a dealer.

Chips that aren't working

Modern electronic key fobs offer more convenience and function than manual keys. However, they also are more prone to damage. A faulty chip is one of the most frequent issues that can cause your key fob from operating correctly. Fortunately, this is often an easy fix.

If your fob is constantly not turning on your car, it is an indication that the chip has become malfunctioning. The issue is usually resolved by replacing the battery which is affordable and easy to locate at any hardware store or big box retailer. Be sure to buy an alternative battery that is compatible with your particular model of car to avoid further problems.

It is also important to ensure that the fob isn't exposed to soapy residue. Water can cause corrosion and interfere with the circuitry. If this is the case, you'll need to clean it using isopropyl alcohol, or an electronic cleaner before putting in the new battery.

When the old battery is replaced, it is an excellent idea to test the function of the fob before driving the vehicle. Using a voltmeter, check the voltage of the new battery to determine whether it is at a safe level. If not, it might be required to replace the entire chip inside the remote. A trained technician from a dealership can assist you in determining the most suitable solution for your car.
