If your door handle for patio door made of uPVC needs replacing it's essential to find the right replacement for your home. Locksmiths can provide and install high-security uPVC handles that come with additional security features.
The most important measurements are measurement A (known as PZ) and the length of the backplate (measurement F). Take these measurements to make sure that your new uPVC handle will fit.
Lever/Lever
A lever is a rigid rod that pivots around an object. When you apply force towards the end, the fulcrum will tend to rotate in the direction that the force is applied. This rotation multiplies your force and allows you to lift or move objects that would otherwise require more force to lift.
The distance between the fulcrum and the place where you apply the force determines how far the lever can move. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage increases when the lever is extended. You can calculate the mechanical advantage by dividing the distance from fulcrum point to the point you are applying force by distance between the fulcrum point and end of lever.
Levers can have a variety of effects depending on the way the force is applied. For example a lever of class 2 tends to rotate in the opposite direction to when the force of effort is applied (like a T-totter). The forces generated by pushing on the handle of a front door will produce rotational effects that are similar to these.
However, levers don't create energy. Levers multiply the force by making small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into greater amounts of force applied over shorter distances. This allows you to complete more work in a shorter amount of time, which is the reason why levers are frequently used for lifting heavy objects or moving large quantities of cargo. This is also the reason behind the levers you find in a variety of everyday tools, such as crowbars and fishing rods, claws for hammers, and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brake of your car.
Lever/Pad
Lever pad handles are a type of door handle made from UPVC that have levers on both sides that operate the multipoint lock. They come in a variety of designs and finishes, and are suitable for a variety of materials, including UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the inner and outer door with spindles & screws included. They are available both hand and unhandled versions to suit different users.
They are commonly used in new constructions and can be used to replace the existing upvc doors. They are usually operated by lifting the levers to throw all of the multipoint locks before turning the key to close and unlock. They provide a bit more security than traditional lever door handles, as the locking can only be performed by the inside using the key.
They're not as secure as a cylinder lock, but they're cost-effective ways to provide extra security to your home. The only drawback is that they don't have the same level of security as a cylinder bolt and therefore don't stop external access if the door has been left open.
We stock a large number of lever pad upvc handles made by top manufacturers in the field. They are made from high-quality components. In general, they are supplied with a manufacturer's warranty.
Typically, these will be designed to work with a 92mm lock or the replacement double glazing window handles version of this called a Paddock lock. They will have a 92mm centre cylinder on the inside and 62mm on the exterior and come with two spindle followers. Some are fitted with the back plate whilst others can be removed to allow for different fixing centers.
Lever/Snib
Lever latches, which are the simplest of all door handles, are commonly used. The lever is pushed down to open a latch inside the door that can be locked using a key. Some lever privacy handles operate in the same way, however with an additional knob, similar to a doorknob.
A snib-button can be extremely useful, particularly for homes where it's important to ensure privacy or security. If your spouse is expected to arrive at home late from work, you can utilize the snib so that they won't be able to enter until they're ready to come in. This kind of handle can also be put in on interior doors such as those in bedrooms where you want to restrict access from outside.
In some cases the snib button can cause problems, particularly when you have older locks or doors that are warped. If the snib button was accidentally pressed by someone who isn't familiar with it, the door may be slammed and you locked out. Usually, you can still get in by knocking on the door's frame or the letterbox, but this isn't ideal.
If your uPVC door has a snib lock it is recommended to replace the handle with a modern E-LOK 7-Series smart lock. These locks can be retrofitted on pull handle kits with double glazed window handles turns and are available with cover plates that hide existing holes, for a seamless install. The E-LOK application can be used to unlock doors using RFID cards or a mechanical keys. Passcodes are also offered for security and convenience. The system is tested to 200,000 cycles to ensure long-term durability. The handles are constructed of solid metal and meet BS EN 1670 Grade 5 for corrosion resistance.
Lever/Moveable Pad
This popular handle design is used for front doors. It offers the benefit of preventing the door being opened without a key from the outside if the lock has not been deadlocked. This is accomplished by using a 'pad-shaped' external handle that locks into the gap between the handle and lock case.
This kind of handle is designed to fit old upvc door handles doors fitted with multipoint locks which operate via split spindle operations. This kind of operation requires the internal lever handle as well as the external pad handle to be mounted on the same lock case. This could be a straightforward replacement for the current uPVC handle, but it could also require a new lock case or a brand new set to handle furniture.
