Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a fundamental component of uPVC frames and must be matched to the existing frame. The key is the spindle's length which determines whether your new uPVC handle will fit.

Use the table below as a quick reference to determine the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will allow you to select the proper window handle replacement for your double-glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are commonly found on upvc (but they're also used in timber and aluminum). The handles are square with a spindle that extends out from the handle's back and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism of the window. The handle is used to operate the locking mechanism that is attached to the window handle repairs (such a good point).

Window handles from Espag come in many different styles and functions. Some have an option to push a button for a locked closed position and key-locking. (And nonlocking against fire when required.) Many reach the Secure by Design specification to add an additional level of security. They also come with a range of different lengths of spindles, which can be adjusted using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindle.

The step height is a different important aspect of the espagnolette handle. This is the distance between the top of the handle and the point at which it rests on the frame. Like other types of euro door handles, you have the choice between straight and cranked styles. Cranked handles can be used in situations where the espagnolette handle is located close to the frame's edge. They provide more room to open the window.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle is a handle that was designed specifically for the manufacturer who wants to offer their customers a stylish and high quality design. These handles are compatible with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They work by having an edge that is locked over the frame's edge to secure the window. This window handle can also be secured so that it opens only when pushed, offering extra security. The handle is available in 5 different finishes with both left hand and right hand versions allowing the fabricator to cater for a wider selection of windows.

These cockspur window handles are supplied with 3 packing pieces of differing thickness, allowing them to be adjusted to a broad range of backset sizes. Each packer can be removed from the handle's nose or added to the size of the step to get an optimum distance of 9mm and 21mm. The handle comes in left and right handed versions, with straight or curved noses.

When looking for a replacement for your current cockspur handles, it's important to measure the current handle height to make sure that the new handle will be suitable for the space. Simply lift it and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. With the ruler or tape measure you can determine the distance between the two screw holes which is usually 43mm from centre to centre.
