Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are great for strolling around the neighborhood or jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver even in tight spots.

For an easy ride, opt for a pram that has air-filled tyres. Also, look for models with 360deg front swivel wheels. However, they are susceptible to punctures so be prepared with an repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

The latest figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They are being replaced by four-wheelers which can be more versatile in terrain, yet still look swanky and being easy to push.

The basic rule is that the bigger the wheels are, the easier it'll be for your buggy to deal with rough ground and bumpy pavements. With larger wheels front and back also makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tested the buggy with a newborn and a 3 wheel double stroller year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said ”it is sturdy to push and very solid when traversing difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable and require periodic pumping) have suspension built-in which was extremely comfortable for my kids.

Another thing to consider is the size of the seat and shape. The seat should be big enough to allow your child to be comfortable and allow them to lie down. Some three wheel pushchair-wheel buggies offer a lie-flat option that allows your child to lie flat and face you, while others only permit a parent-facing option.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or muddy walks. This buggy is suitable for a single child from birth and can be modified to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers up to age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a large padded seat unit. Storage options are also great with a large basket with zip pockets on the hood, and an attractive pouch on the rear of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels will give your buggy greater stability when driving on rough terrain. This is perfect for off-road buggies. They also make it easier to navigate the pushchair through tight spaces. Certain three-wheeled buggies have wheels that swivel on the front to aid in maneuvering around tight corners. Others are designed for running and have fixed wheels that lock for increased speed and stability. This is particularly useful when you bump against the kerb or a tree. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.

Many 3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres, which means they can be used on different terrains and are much more flexible than four wheelers. They're also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures and you'll need to keep a repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.

Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3 wheel stroller cheap-wheelers. These buggies, as per MFM's Kath, have larger wheels, which, she says ”perform well on gravel roads, grass and market town cobbles” and are able to go up or down kerbs. They also have a suspension system that in her words ”smoothes out bumps very effectively”.

The downside of having bigger wheels is that they make some buggies quite broad and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This is a problem if you're using it as a jogger or you need to be able to get through doorways that are narrow when you're out and out and about. Many models have small folding options that let you remove the front wheels and store them in a more compact manner.

Easy to Manoeuvre

A three-wheel buggy can be more maneuverable for a child. They are designed to ensure that the front wheels can turn on a dime, and are easy to move, making them ideal for terrains that are difficult, such as parks, cobblestones, bumpy roads, and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tested a 3 wheeler with her infant and toddler and stated: ”The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough terrain, with the swivel front wheel being especially helpful. I was also impressed with how well it dealt with kerbs using the hand-operated break. I found it extremely steady when I was driving downhill or on uneven ground.”

The only downside to this great maneuverability, is that the larger wheels of a 3 wheel baby strollers-wheel buggy may make it difficult to fit into tight spaces. This is something you need to keep in mind when you live in an urban area. If this is the case then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better choice for you.
