Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio players working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. The album is different from the ballads of previous albums and includes some heavy rock. The album was their first to go platinum in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a new album and change their name a different producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few months in Europe they come to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993. It also features a cover of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring group includes drummer Lenny Castro and bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem Von Schroeck.

The album was a return to form for the group, and the tour accompanied it with sold-out shows in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
