It's more expensive and will take up a lot of space on your counter. It's a high-performance pod coffee maker that feels sturdy.

1. Nespresso Compatible

If you're a Nespresso lover, you'll need to pick the best coffee pod machine compatible with the brand's capsules. You may want to choose a model which can also utilize other capsules, like organic and Fairtrade, or specialty flavored pods. They are usually available for a similar price to the original ones, and some even include an integrated milk frother which allows you to make the perfect cappuccino or latte.

Bruvi's entry into the pod machine industry in 2022 was greeted with excitement. The brightly-colored device promised a variety of drinks as well as a better coffee experience than any other pod machine, and pods can be thrown away without worrying about the environmental impact.

It is a winner on three counts. The pod coffee maker is small and inexpensive yet it makes an intense and rich cup of espresso each time. It's also one of the quietest models on the market, so you can make an espresso cup Joe before your alarm starts.

The Bruvi comes with two sizes of cups that can be adjusted to match the type of drink you're making. If you're making a latte or cappuccino it comes with three different textures and temperature settings for the milk so you can enjoy your froth. It also makes hot cocoa, which is ideal for both kids and adults who are looking to relax.

A sleep function that can be programmed is another plus. It goes into standby mode after a period of time without use. It's also easy to clean and requires very little water. If you're looking to keep your energy costs low, consider opting for an appliance that has an open capsule holder that is removable for easier emptying.

There are other accessories you can add to your coffee pod machine such as a milk frother (unless it's part of the model you purchase). Other items you may want to look into include the possibility of a reusable filter to use with capsules that can be reused, a water kettle or thermometer to ensure precise temperature control and an insulated travel cup.

2. Easy to Clean

A coffee pod machine is an easy method to start your morning with a hot cup coffee. Simply load a pod, switch on and in only a couple of minutes you have a freshly brewed beverage. These machines are also very easy to clean, and the majority of them don't require daily maintenance - just refilling the tank with water and descaling every six months or so.

Keurig's K-Cups offer the widest selection available. Both Keurig and Nespresso have made their aluminum pods more recyclable by replacing them with polypropylene, and the latter is now offering free capsule recycling bags which can be picked up at any of its stores or UPS stores. Bruvi is a new competitor, makes use of pods that can only be used with its own brewers and are designed to be able to break down quickly in landfills and not leave microplastics.

3. Fast Brewing

These devices are foolproof and can make the perfect cup of coffee, espresso or tea in mere minutes with no clean up. And while these machines do generate more waste for the environment than their drip counterparts but they're a lot less laborious than making a batch of whole beans in a French press or pour-over.

Some models even come with milk frothers that can be added to create an incredibly creamy cappuccino or latte.

Another factor to consider is the design of a pod-based coffee machine. The color and finish of the machine, as well as the location and size of the water reservoir and pod compartment will affect the way your machine appears on your counter. Some brands offer different colored pods so that you can change your drink according to the mood or season.

Although a small footprint may be desirable, it is essential that your machine is able to make multiple cups in between refills. For the average household the water tank that is at least 40 ounces will suffice for most pod coffee makers.

4. Variety of Drinks

The pod machines are extremely versatile and, depending on the brand you choose they can make a variety of drinks. Some brands, such as Keurig's popular Keurig system as well as Sage's Nespresso collaboration, can make four different sizes of drinks, while others offer only two or three. The Grind One makes a great illustration. Its minimalist design is a step away from the curvature that is seen on other pod coffee makers. It's smaller than the majority of Keurigs, making it perfect for small kitchens and dorms. The reservoir can hold up to 40 inches of water and is easy to access. The capsules that are used are placed in a container. Other than keeping the reservoir full and descaling every six months or so, the machine requires minimal maintenance.

This model is more expensive than some of the other models we've reviewed, however, it provides a superior experience. The drip tray can be adjusted to ensure it will fit tall travel mugs or short espresso cups. It also produces a great tasting brew - especially for an automatic. The only reason we didn't grant it the top spot is due to its lack of milk-frothing capabilities. the only option available is to make use of dried skimmed milk capsules that don't taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. If it had a built-in milk maker then we'd be inclined to give this machine the top spot.
