Upgrades will give you a boost to specific stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by +3. A random extra substat is also increased with every upgrade.
Upgraded gear generally sees greater value for trade, unless it has inherently low requirements (like the FB shield of the sorc) or very high stat variation (like eth titan weapons). Upgrades are less valuable for those with higher variance due to the requirement to roll the perfect version.
Recycle Points
The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. The item used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.
You can upgrade your equipment anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every several weeks.
The cost of upgrading will be based on the current level of the item being upgraded however, they will always be cheaper than buying new gear from other sources. Upgrades such as upgrading a Benthic chest to the level of ilvl385 will cost you 20 recycle points. Buying a similar item upgrades will cost you 105.
Valorstones
Upgrades are items which can be used to level up weapons tools, armor, and other items. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to Item Level Upgrade owners for a variety of currencies. They can also find them in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade has been purchased, it can be used on any weapon, tool, or armor using the help of button, which will display an image of the item at its next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.
The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.
Many locations offer item upgraders, including the main Island and some outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade discount and the chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items that are being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.
Contrary to Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item upgrade upgrader available at the start of Icewind Dale. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available via a variety of ways. This is both a benefit and a drawback.
In Season 3 the upgrade item system was modified a bit, and numerous new features added. After an upgrade has been completed to a specific level for an armor slot upgrading other items to the same item level, will cost less. This is true even if the items come from a different set of equipment.
The discount applies to all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests required for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain achievement milestones.
Crests
Players have a variety of options for upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. Crests are more specific and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral part of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They are available in four ranks.
The first thing to note is that crests can only be spent on equipment that is of a particular rank, and that every rank has different requirements for upgrading. The simplest and easiest upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade can require up to 20 crests, based on the type or equipment being upgraded.
Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons of any difficulty for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ heroic raid bosses or dungeons for gear that is used in the endgame. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader like Cuzolth or Vaskarn in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and pathways.
The use of these currencies isn't that difficult, but the system does introduce some changes to the overall upgrade process. For instance, once an item reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change is designed to allow players to get their equipment up to the highest level possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

It is best to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests to be used for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill multiple slots. The account-wide discount will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
